swimottawa Masters: clean, modern facility...in a new salt water environment!

NEWS ARCHIVE

April 6, 2011

Hello Masters,

It's been a great couple of weeks with some record achievements, travels, and kudos along the way. Marie and most of my family (except our pets and dog-sitter, Trevor) returned from an outstanding kids swim camp in Phoenix, AZ where we swam outside in humidless(!) sunshine, did a trail leading to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and swam beside some Japanese national team members who were impersonating human dolphins.

We also had a great turnout for our very first club-attended Masters meet with many first-time swimmers some of which started to swim this year. I cannot extol the virtues enough regarding competitions and how they help you develop your focus and swimming skills. First-timer Dawn (Tue/Thu pm'er) put it this way:

Hi Tom
Just wanted to say thank you for encouraging me (and the whole team) to sign up for the masters swim meet. I never thought I would as it seemed way too intimidating to be at a competition knowing that i'm not a very fast or strong swimmer. But signing up gave me lots of motivation before the meet to push myself out of my comfort zone in every practice. It gave me more focus for every lap and repeat as I'd tell myself that I had to push harder so race day would seem just like a practice. It also made me realize starting blocks aren't so scary after all. Thanks for pushing me out of my comfort zone I know competing in that little meet will help me be a better and more confident swimmer... and who knows I might even sign up for another one cause it was surprisingly fun, especially the winning part.
Dawn

As for her comment about the 'winning part', we had a grudge match between the OLDIES versus the YOUNGIES 4x50 FR relay. Going in, the younger crew had a one-second lead...on paper. Both relays had individuals swimming faster than they ever have according to the splits and it was the OLDIES who ruled by a one-second margin! Relays are always the funnest part of a meet both to participate and watch!

Cancellations and practice changes
We are going to be hit with a bit of a double whammy with CU closing for maintenance mid-April as well as JCC Passover closures. Here are the changes:
Sun CU 10 am cancelled Apr 17-May 8 or 14 (TBA). JCC Sun 6:45 am will be on as usual.
JCC Passover facility closures will affect the following closures:
Mon Apr 18 8:30 pm cancelled (am/noon still on)
Tue-Wed Apr 19/20 all practices cancelled
Mon-Tue Apr 25/26 all practices cancelled
*For these weeks, members can drop in to any other practice during the week. We'll fit you in. We will offer a practice Easter weekend Sun Apr 24 6:45 am at JCC.
Other Notes
They are tightening up the sign-in procedure at the JCC front desk. I am working on getting a Masters list they can check. In the meantime, bring ID to show. Please cooperate with the current procedure and let me know if there are any issues as I would like to be involved in any dealings with our club and the JCC facility.

There has been some strong interest in our outdoor summer program starting mid-June to August. Details will follow shortly with first dibs to our current members, then it opens to outsiders. I expect a full crowd again...and fun outside!

Some of you need a refresher on starts and turns. Click the links below to review the movies and practice, practice...

Some quick news about upcoming events:
Congrats to Jennifer D Tue/Thu who took off the most in the 500m for time (Nov vs. Feb) and a whopping 90 seconds. Also, kudos to lane mate Erin M (what was in that lane anyway?!) and John J of Mon/Wed am who also took off more than 60 seconds. And, to Krista C and Tim W of Mon/Wed pm who did the swim twice in consecutive weeks :)

Yes, there are practices this Sunday at JCC 6:45 am and CU at 10-11:30 am

No practices Family Day Monday, February 21, 2011.

Fun Pentathlon Sunday Feb 27th (not this weekend) at both JCC and CU practice times. See how much you've improved in 25 Fly, 50 BK, 75 BR, 200 FR, and 100 IM events! Warmup and warm-down lanes will be provided during heats. Door prizes!

Reply back if you want to swim during March Break and I will negotiate practices.

I've received some interest in the Masters Meet Fri-Sun Mar. 25-27, 2011 at the Nepean Sportsplex. Early indications for Friday 50 Free and/or Saturday 100 Free, 50 Breast and a mixed relay. If you are interested in learning more, let me know by end of this weekend. See notes and link below.

Finally, a note from Trevor:
Hi Masters!

I've talked to some of you at practice, and here is the link for the fundraising opportunity:
http://convio.cancer.ca/site/TR?fr_id=8791&pg=entry.

This is for the 2011 Relay For Life happening at Carleton University on March 6th from 7pm-7 am. I will participating in this event to help raise money for cancer research and I have to gather a minimum of $100. Our team is going to be doing various events throughout the night/morning for the full 12 hours. Recently, a cousin of mine (9 years old) was unfortunately diagnosed with a rare form of cancer and this is why I got involved.

The link provides extra information if you're interested to know more about it, and here are the steps for pledging myself if you get lost:

- Go to the link provided at the top of the email
- Under the "Fight Back Against Cancer" heading, click on Pledge a Participant or Team, located on the left side of the web page.
- Search for an individual participant, with my first name: Trevor, and last name: Anzai

Dec 22/10

Congratulations to the many Annual Pentathlon participants who won one of the $300+ door prizes offered December 12th...you all swam fast and (most) did legal starts and turns! Look for a return in the Spring with another modified pentathlon. Remember that these types of events are designed to make you put into action what you practice so you become a better swimmer. By that I mean swimming your fastest within the legal parameters of swimming rules (e.g., two-hand touch in fly/br, touch wall on your back in bk, no false starts).

You will find a longer-set practice for Practice #2 this week compliments of Mon/Wed am'er, Michelle, in the form of a pyramid. This will test your endurance and provide you a sense of accomplishment...when you finish.

I worked on getting add'l pool time over the holidays due to some enquiries. Here's the schedule for the rest of the holidays.
No practice Sun Dec 26th due to holiday.

'Swim with the coach(es)' Dec 27/29 Mon/Wed 6:05-7:20 am & Mon/Wed 8:30-9:30 pm. The practices will be written on the board and you are invited to swim with the coach(es) in the three lanes. Any swimottawa Masters swimmer at any session is invited to any of these times. Please swim in a lane that is suitable to your swim skill. *Unless you are a JCC member, there will be no entry to any other swim session (e.g., Tue/Thu am or pm) as there will be a member open swim underway and the front desk will be checking.

Regular practices resume Sun Jan 2nd at both JCC 6:45-8:00 am and CU 10 am (until 11:15 am due to Ladies holiday swim that follows).
Other news
Congrats to pm'ers, Tim and Carolyn, who have moved into their new home on Ruskin Ave. We missed the house warming you mentioned :(

Congrats on pm'er, Dawn, who purchased a cottage in November on the Big Rideau. She plans on perfecting her dive from her dock...
Enjoy the extra practices we are offering you!

Dec 5/10

The year is coming to a close and I can tell...Christmas music is playing, the dog is like a kid seeing snow for the first time, and (most) of the bikes are in storage. But one thing stays constant and that's the ability to continue to swim indoors for another six months. Maybe that's not a selling point, but a fact of life here in the northern hemisphere.
Speaking of continuing to swim, my advice for those that want to improve, get fit and faster is to try to make it out three times per week. My experience is that twice can maintain your swimming skills but a third practice allows you to develop faster. Join the 30+ people who are making it out Sunday am. Take advantage of the two swim times that morning as we pack more endurance sets in. If you attend Carleton U we'll spice it up with something fun and different. For example, we got to play in the bubbler last week under the dive towers after a hard 3K+ pyramid practice.
Notes
Annual Pentathlon next Sunday, December 12th. At both practices, we will run a fun time trial where you do five events of varying distances (25 fly, 50 bk, 75 br, 100 fr, and 100 IM) with random door prizes from Swim Santa. You'll do a warmup and then do the Pentathlon. All in fun! For those that who would rather continue the practice, you can do that as well with a long boring set :P
Swim wear: you can purchase fins (we'll be doing more fin work), goggles, caps, bags, etc. by using the Online Swim Wear Order link. Best to use that online form so we can track and verify your orders.
Practice Cancellations: we'll continue practices right up to Christmas and then take a break Dec 26-30 (I can arrange some JCC pool time and give you practices if you intend to swim that week). Practice will resume Sun Jan 2 at both JCC and Carleton U (CU will end at 11:15 am on Dec 19 and Jan 2 due to earlier Ladies swim that follows). C'mon out and work off that turkey!
Congratulations to Sindy Dobson who beat her goal and finished 17th and the first Canadian in her category at the World Triathlon Championships in Clearwater, FL.
Do you experience this? Some of us get a periodic high heart rate that 'flutters' for a while and we have to back off. I've noticed it running a few years ago and experience it when swimming occassionally.
Enjoy the busy month and take a break...by swimming!

Oct. 15, 2010

You can worship Sunday...in the pool! We are starting back with two choices either Sun 6:45-8 am at JCC (meet at pool back door at 6:40 am with Coach Maggie) or 10-11:15 am at Carleton with Coach Devon and I. Hope to see you out religiously...

It's the full regular schedule once again and we had a great week of 'gentle' swimming. We will go over some basic drills and lead up to more intense practices in the next month. Use the time now to work on technique while you can as it will make a difference. We will introduce competitive starts and turns and even have a fun meet in preparation for some informal competitions. It's one of the best ways to get you motivated and improved...really.

You'll see me in the odd practice as well. Don't be surprised if I surface in one of your lanes as it's one of the best ways to see what you're doing under the water. I've already synchro swam with some of you already to work on technique and walls. OK, you were warned.

Have a great weekend,

Tom

Oct 13/2010

OK, I had withdrawls and had to swim outside again...had to travel 2500 km to do it though... The attached photo is me on deck after lap swimming in Dallas, TX the final week before the roof was to be installed at the local college. Yes, that's right...a removeable roof! Hey, JCC there's an idea for you! And, I got in as a Senior and swam for free...just told him I felt like a senior under my breath. The second photo is the rest of the Swimzai's on my birthday (my 27th BTW) and our annual visit to my father's grave after dinner at his favourite fish 'n chip place Merivale Fish Market. I remember my dad coaching us and watching Doc Councilman 8mm swimming movies in our basement. Life has come full circle as several of our kids, Perhaps you've seen Trevor, Kenton, and Emily as well as Marie (her dad coached her too) on deck at the Masters practices.

Enough about us, let's move on to you. We've had some good practices at Brewer, UofO, and Carleton as we await the re-opening of the JCC. I'm told that we can start Wed Oct 13th at the JCC (they tell me that the health inspection gets done Tue) and resume our normal practice schedule. Until then, keep attending the make-up practices listed over at http://www.swimottawa.com/Masters-news.htm I will continually communicate with y'all about any further changes.

SwimOttawa Caps Available
One of the benefits of having artistic family members...and long flights to design mockups is to create a new SwimOttawa cap. I wanted to focus on the Canadian maple leaf as the nation's capital while using the '72 Team Canada hockey logo as inspiration. It's a two-color (red and black) on a white cap that shows up well (see attached pool photo). It's good trade bait too :)

You can now purchase member-discounted $8 silicone (thicker, longer lasting, stays white) or $4 latex (thinner, will yellow over time). Reply back and bring cash to the next practice.

Video Footage
Click to watch Canada's, Ryan Cochrane, on his way to the nation's first gold at the Commonwealth Games today. Watch the constant kicking, heels breaking surface, and dolphin kick off walls...even during a long distance event. Try to emulate that at your next practice.

Hope to see you tonight, Sat, and/or Sunday.

Well, that was a mish-mash of responses...looks like many will go with the flow. I, too, have survived a couple of lap swims at City pools (sheesh, some of those swimmers need to be taught lane etiquette :P) I even tested out he outdoor pool this morning to make sure it is still heated (yes) and underused (yes). It will be warm compared to those of you who swim open water. I may have to join you as part of the chase group...

So, here's what I have booked (ALL members are permitted to swim ANY of the practices below--we will start restrictions once the indoor JCC pool reopens). C'mon out and make use of the lane space!

*Outdoor pool will be closed in the event of visible lightening for 15 minutes. Call Tom's cell at 613 558-2238 if in doubt.

  • Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu from 6:15-7:15 am JCC outdoors starting tomorrow Sept. 14th for as long as the outdoor pool remains open. Note that the JCC is closed Thu Sept 23 and Sept 30 due to holidays.
  • Tue or Thu 6:00-7:00 pm JCC outdoors this week and Tue the following weeks (due to Thu holiday closure) for as long as the outdoor pool remains open.
  • Mon/Wed noon swimmers -- contact me to get access to the outdoor JCC pool and I will provide a workout.
  • Monday Sept. 20, 27, Oct 4 from 6-7 pm at UofO, deep end.
  • Sat Sep 25, Oct 2, Oct 9 5:30-6:30 pm at Brewer.
  • Sun Sep 26 from 10-11:15 am at CU (regular practice continues to Spring.
  • Additionally, we will continue to swim through March Break and extend the season until the first week of June.
Visit http://www.swimottawa.com/Masters-news.htm for a calendar-format with updates and any further changes. We appreciate your cooperation and apologize on behalf of the Centre for the delays.

See you poolside,

Tom

Sept 8, 2010

  • Hello Masters, I've been busy looking at the registration and assembling lane assignments based on the reg forms I received. Too, I've been in multiple discussions with the SJCC about the maintenance delays for the indoor pool, which may not open until early to mid October as they have just started the tiling process. That said, I've been canvassing alternative swim options including the following:
An earlier start by swimming in the outdoor pool as soon as next week Sept. 12 and continuing as long as it remains open (expected to be two more weeks). Keep in mind the holidays closures listed over at http://www.swimottawa.com/Masters-news.htm. Let me know if you're interested 6:15-7:15 am, noon, or 6-7 pm.
  • Sunday morning at Carleton U 10-11:15 am starting Sept. 26 onwards.
  • Monday nights at UofO 6-7 pm. I would need a minimum of 10 swimmers. Pay parking and cold pool.
  • Saturday nights at Brewer Pool (opposite CU off Bronson) 5:30-6:30 pm.

Let me know what you think of the options above as based on your input I will decide whether to incur extra expenses to rent the additional pool time. My apologies on behalf of the Centre but my hope is that the end result will be a better facility with new tiling throughout as well as line markings that are centered on each lane (my input).

  • Other notes of interest:
We typically wait until the start of the season before we charge your credit cards. If you are paying by cheque, please make payable to 'Anzai! Inc.' and send to 963 Killeen Avenue, Ottawa K2A 2Y1. When you submit your online registration form, it reserves your spot for that time slot. If we do not receive payment promptly, then you will be bumped in favour of someone on the wait list.
  • We really want to make sure that new members fit in one of the three assigned lanes. We will not charge new members until after the first week when we can see whether you are a good fit with our program and vice-versa.
  • We are at a max level and I will continue to monitor the groups to make sure we all fit within the lane space provided. Please make sure you ask permission should you want to change sessions (and in some cases, it may not be possible).
  • Due to holidays, some groups may incur cancellations due to holidays. Therefore, I will honour a make-up at an addiitonal session (am, noon, or pm) that week when a practice is cancelled.
  • I plan on coaching at least one session per group except for week's where I have to go on business travel. When I am away there will be a coach on deck such as katy, Fraser, Scott, and Vicki. Keep in mind that all practices are pre-planned by yours truly...just the face that enforces it on deck may be different. I may even join a practice with you :)
  • Your protocol is to arrive on time, be courteous of your lane mates, help put in lane lines, and ensure it's a congenial atmosphere as it's always been.

Lastly, visit our web site for the latest news, upcoming clinics, and socials. It's all there (and if it's not, I'll put it there!)
Looking forward to seeing you poolside soon,

Tom

Well, we have lots of congratulations to hand out...congrats to many of you who have completed Iron Man competitions in Lake Placid, NYC, and soon to be Ottawa and New Hampshire as well as seven hour (trail runs--Shelley M) or watching 48 km open water swims {yawn-Kathryn M} in Quebec. New Hampshire seems to be a 'honeymoon' event for our newly married duo of Jon H and Sindy D who finally agreed to swim upstream together in holy matrimony (see photo). Yes, Jon, he of fame and the instigator of the 'John Drill' (5 strokes left arm, 1 stroke right arm) as he recovers from a shoulder injury.

Also, special congrats to para athlete, Kim F, who sent this note:

NYC Triathlon went very well. I swam the 1500m in under 23 mins - mind you there was a current in the Hudson that helped us along. I did exactly what you had told me to do - arm swings and visualization. It really calmed me down and I was not nervous at the start at all. It was an awesome feeling. I beat the two USA girls by 2 and 3 mins respectively. It was a pleasant surprise and shot my confidence thru the roof…always a good thing.

OK, any one that complains about the Ottawa River, how about swimming in the Hudson? Now that partner, Curtis S, can now see the board thanks to prescription goggles he can see what lurks in the depths of Mirror Lake, Lake Placid next IMLP :)

  • Finally, special birthday wishes to Sue W, Jessica R, Trina P, Jenna R, James W, Carloline T, Katy C, Colleen W, and Tim W who have, or soon will, celebrate another year. Lastly to my wife, Marie, who turns 19 today...which makes me only 24...in maturity.

OK, I have swum in many pools and outdoor locations but I don't think you can beat the 137 metre (!) outdoor Kitslano Beach pool in Vancouver, B.C. Took me over 2 minutes to do one length (my son Kenton did it in 1:40 but I think it's a body mass advantage :-) and a great way to swim long distance. See the attached tiny photos (Trevor posing and one with my nephews and nieces)...can't beat the view of the ocean and the coastal mountains. Nice!

Better late than never for completing our 2K Canada Day swim. We missed the event during the actual holiday but you'll have a chance to complete it early this week as we work towards the 3K Bring on the Bay swim this Saturday. You have progressed from 300m, 500m, 1000/1500m, and now to 2000m during practice and should be ready to go. Break down the distance using some of the strategy we have incorporated in practice: start with focusing on a long stroke, work on build, negative split, and finish as strong as you can!

There are two reasons why I have chosen to co-sponsor this event: (1) for Easter Seals charity where proceeds go directly towards helping kids with disabilities, and (2) to support our local Ottawa River watershed in the hopes that improvements will be made so generations can continue to swim in events such as this. When you do the swim, think of who you are supporting and how fortunate you are to be able to participate in an event where you represent 1/100th of a percent of Ottawans who can accomplish this feat. There will be a record number of Swim Ottawa participants and you can still register and save $5 as a member.

Go to http://bringonthebay.com/index.php?title=Register before Thursday 5pm and join us! Remember to say "cheese" for our Swim Ottawa group photo at the finish line! If you can't attend, consider sponsoring me as I swim the 3K again this year in I.M. order (fly modified, back, breast, and free)...http://my.e2rm.com/personalPage.aspx?registrationID=916703.

Other notes:

  • You are invited to attend ANY additional session throughout the week as we do have lane space. Just come and we'll fit you in. Our Fun Fridays are popular and it's a great way to end the week of hard work. Expect some creative sets and team events!
  • Practice cancelled Monday August 2nd for the Civic holiday. Last practice is Friday, August 27th. Fall/Winter/Spring indoor JCC registration to be announced in August with early registration for returning members. We anticipate another full indoor season.
  • Missed any news or practice changes? Go to http://www.swimottawa.com/Masters-news.htm
  • Planning on a trip to the U.S. and need a place to swim? Go to http://www.usms.org/placswim/ and click the State. I've used this many times and have dropped in to various Masters practices around the country. Most do not charge.

Well, that week went fast...too fast. If it's an indication of the outdoor season, you'd be advised to maximized your swim outdoors while you can! We've had over a week to survey the lane space and I'm happy to say that it's all working out. If you want to augment your usual practices with other sessions, contact me and I'll confirm space availability. So far, so good!

~Bring on the Bay~
Your goal this season is to become better swimmers. One goal to achieve this is to participate in the Sat July 17th Bring on the Bay 3K swim from Nepean to Britannia Sailing Clubs. It's a great, straight course with many types of skill levels. Best of all it's for charity and one of the reasons that Swim Ottawa is a co-sponsor. Register now at www.bringonthebay.com and select the discounted 'swim ottawa' $35 rate. I'd like a record number of participants in this event this summer...register now and join the gang!

Q&A's as we start of our outdoor season:

Where's the best place to park? Closest to pool is the parking lot east of building. To get there, turn onto Broadview from Carling and turn left on Kerr at stop sign. Turn right after JCC main parking lot exit and drive down towards outdoor pool fence. Or, park at school fenced parking lot next left on Broadview (just past main parking lot entrance).

Where to shower and change? There are outdoor change stalls in the shallow end of the outdoor pool. There is an outdoor shower in opposite corner. It's cool water to start and gets slightly warm. Else, go through the front door and use the indoor showers. There are outdoor washrooms in the porta hut in front of the pool area at end of parking lot.

Can I come to additional practices? Contact Tom and confirm as we want to ensure adequate lane space for all. Note that we rotate practices every other day so you may do the same one if you do back-to-back practices.

What's the rain/bad weather policy? We swim in the rain but not when there's thunderstorms nearby. Use this link to check severe weather watches indicated in a red highlight that would be located at the top of the web page. Check http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/city/pages/on-118_metric_e.html Call or text my cell if in doubt at 613 558-2238.

I need swim wear, goggles, fins, etc.
Contact Tom as I'll be placing a Speedo or TYR order including prescription goggles for $20, fins for $30, hand paddles for $20, poly suits from $48 female and $24 for male. As members of Swim Ottawa you qualify for discounts on swim wear and equipment. For an online order form go to https://secure.leda.lunarmania.com/~anzai0/swimottawa/Forms/Reg-swimwear.htm.

Do you film swimmers and analyze their strokes? Yes, we'll be bringing out the video equipment soon. Contact the coaches and we'll book some time with you and provide feedback. There is no additional fee for this one-on-one service.

What is Fun Friday all about? We celebrate Fridays as a reprieve from typical swim training and sprinkle in one part creative sets with one part fun (at least from the coach perspective :-). None the less, it's all meant to increase your enjoyment and swimming skills. Everyone is invited to Fun Fridays!

Got any more questions...let me know.

See you poolside,

Tom

Hello Masters,

You know you're obsessed when...you're watching an in flight movie about dolphins swimming and you have an idea about how to teach Masters the butterfly. This is why we had you jump off the bottom of the pool last week during a progressive fly set :) Tip is to throw your body forward, not up!, as you swing your arms forward. Of course, growing a strong fin would help as well.

We're starting to get even more creative with some practice ideas we've picked up over the years. I understand the noon group were the lucky ones who rolled successive 50's sets versus the 200 butterfly ones. Lucky rollers! Get ready for some sprint 25's, followed by progressive IM, then negative split sets on the weekend (JCC open, CU closed one more week). You'll have lots of variety in our program in an effort to break up the monotony of swimming the same ol', same 'ol. Been there, done that, and trying to forget...

Thanks to all who have registered early for the Spring/Summer session. I am glad to announce at this time that all early registrants got their first preference with the 6-7 am session now full and others filling up fast. I really appreciate your understanding with regards to the reduced lane space this outdoor season due to circumstances outside our control (JCC maintenance) and I am awaiting final confirmation as to additional pool availability where possible. I'll keep you up to date as I find out.

Some Observations I Made Last Week
Just some random things I saw and thought while coaching and swimming (in no particular order):

Heather M, most under rated swimmer in the 1500m for time swim
Jim T, how can we harness his power in the water and share with the rest of us (me included--got lapped)
Joanne W is willing herself to hang on until the outdoor season, especially Fun Fridays!

John J, cottage open water swim in June. Be there.

Colleen W, got a new suit...maybe
Shelley M may have a quizzical look, but she enjoys her swims
Wendy M just finished her "Maddie" book tour and survived Toronto...barely
Linda M thinks taking rest is a waste of time?

Alan S actually see the airport more than I do
Alex C is getting some work done as a result of x-skiing poling?
Andi M took charge in the 1500m once again
Hana H does not accept not finishing ANY workout
Marianne V can still alpine ski (I feel my knees typing that)
Theresa K hopefully has some clear goggles (if not, I'll order some)

Judith H likes to smoke in her car before and after practice, and sometimes between sets in the lifeguard chair

Dawn M loves her dog
Peter C is still alive after Boston (how did it go?)
Lynne S experienced the same wind shear in Denver a few weeks ago (I trust this airplane, I trust this airplane...)
Linda S has one of the best attendance...and it shows!

Our condolences go out to noon swimmer, Andrea Douglas, who lost her father recently. She and her daughter, Maggie, will hopefully be out in a future weekend swim together.

Another Testimonial

Richard Coburn (General Comments in TriRudy)

Hello Brian

I looked around a few months ago for a masters swim club and was most impressed with Tom Anzai’s club the Swim Ottawa Masters. I have now been swimming with this club for four months and love the training I have received and feel much stronger and faster in the water then when I started. About 70% of the time is spend on the front crawl, I like that we get to do a few other strokes to even out the muscle balance in the upper body and break up the monotony of just one stroke. Tom and the rest of the coaches are top notch, and there are a lot of triathletes in the group.

*This Sunday Mar 21 at JCC am is cancelled as all qualified coaches are unavailable during the March Break. There will be a CU practice at 10-11:15 am as per usual with coach Trevor.

Florida here was cloudy and light rain yesterday. Off to the beach with the swim kids today to swim by Anglin's Pier north of Ft. Lauderdale. We have a good sprint turn set for you after observing a local team practice!

At the very bottom of this email is your Pentathlon results that you should file away as we'll see how well you improve next time!

Good Spring Weather to You All Masters,

With this weather we'll be sure to have some of you biking with me to practice :) Good to see the 38 performances during the Pentathlon events. It's a really great way to do entire race from dive, glide, swim, legal turn and finish from A-to-Z. I do believe most of you came away with things to work on during regular practices, whether it be the start, turn, or just how to pace your swim to maximize the results. Look for an 'Iron Man Favorite Workout' in a couple of Sundays to work on endurance...

You can download your Pentathlon results here...thanks to noon Andrea D for inputting them!

This week's notes:
  • Morning sign in--you will notice a Masters list used for JCC sign ins. Please continue to cooperate with the front desk staff in order to ensure your expedient entry into the facility.

  • March Break--I've made the attempt to continue every practice during next week's March Break, please come out to practices if you're in town.

  • Sun Video at CU--If you would like to be filmed for any stroke, turn, whatever...I invite you to come this Sunday, March 14th at Carleton U for practice 10-11:15 am. This is a free video evaluation for our members. Reply back before Sunday if you're interested and I'll slot you in!

  • JCC cancellations--closed Monday 4pm onwards March 29; Tuesday/Wednesday March 30, 31, Monday/Tuesday April 5, 6 Tuesday 4pm onwards May 18, Wednesday/Thursday May 19, 20

  • Off to Florida--Tom, Marie and most of our kids will be off to Florida Mar 15-23 for...you guessed it...a swim training camp. We will have backup coaches on hand to cover. Enjoy the melting snow!

Hi swimottawa Masters,

One of the ways to improve your swimming is to get the odd nudge and wink-wink from us coaches...and get you to do things like 5/6 x 200 BPA (Best Possible Average) that you would not normally do on your own. You all did a great job and have tested your progress to this point. That said, there is another inexpensive way to improve and that is to join in a fun competition this Sunday at our first Pentathlon at the vast CU pool!

Swimming is an individual sport where you improve based on your own merits. Competing is a way to test out what you have learned and come away with the richness of experience. For this special event, I'd like you to join our club and have some fun trying out the four strokes you've been practicing the past 7 weeks. Free up some time and let your partner take the kids to hockey/soccer...drop the vacuum and join us poolside.

Here's the deal... Anyone who bests their 200 Free by 10 seconds or more from this week's 200 BPA's at the Pentathlon...will win free smoothies for EVERYONE at Great Eggspectations following the event. That's right, do it for the team!

p.s. The more inexperienced swimmers will have a better chance than faster swimmers to do this as they are the ones who improve more rapidly!

Other events: For those of you who cannot attend this event, circle Sat Dec 12 6:00-7:45pm @ Brewer for our annual 1500m Prediction for charity and Sun Feb 21 for the Nepean Masters Winterlude meet at the Sportsplex (50m pool, various events). It is my goal that we get at least 10 swimmers out and compete as a club!

Cancellations/changes: Sun Nov 8th changed to the Pentathlon Time Trial 9-11:15 am (no practice 10-11:15 am).

Join Us Poolside For a Fun Swim Pentathlon!
Sunday, November 8th, 2009 @ Carleton University

The briefing:

  • You must register before the event!
  • Come ready to swim at Carleton University shallow-end pool for the 9:00-9:30 am warmup of about 1000-1200 metres (or your choice). Deck must be vacated by 11:20 am for the women's only swim that follows.
  • Participants do five (5) separate events consisting of a 25m fly, 50m back, 100m breast, 200m free and 100m IM. Push off starts in water (no diving).
  • Open to a limited number of Masters swimmers of all ages and abilities. Swimmers help time other heats.
  • Bring a towel and something warm to wear on deck such as a warm up jacket and pants as you'll be waiting between heats.

Hi swimottawa Masters,

One of the best ways to improve is to test out your progress. I hope you enjoyed the 5/6 x 100 test sets last week. We will do it again and see how you fare! That said, I would like to invite  you all to our First Annual Pentathlon Swim Event! This is a great way to perform all four strokes, practice your turns, BR pullouts, and stroke technique. I hope to see you out there for this fun event!

Pentathlon Time Trial, Sun Nov 8 (9-11:15 am @ Carleton U pool!) Come and join a fun time trial where participants do five (5) separate events consisting of a 25m fly, 50m back, 100m breast, 200m free and 100m IM. Open to all Masters swimmers of all ages and abilities. Swimmers help time other heats. Register here!

Cost is a measly $5 to cover the additional pool time fee.

Cancellations/changes: Sun Nov 1st CU 10am cancelled in lieu of the FR stroke clinic, Sun Nov 8th changed to the Pentathlon Time Trial 9-11:15 am (no practice 10-11:15 am). JCC practice both Sun Nov 1 and 8 are still on!

Other news:

  • We are in the process of registering swimmers with Masters Swim Ontario. Please let me know if you are already registered OR have registered in the past. This will allow you to swim at local meets, and more importantly, covers you for liability. There is no cost to full members (excludes drop-in) as this is included in your swimottawa fee.

  • Interested in participating at a Masters meet Dec 5th, Jan 30, Mar 13 @ UofO (organized by TechnoSport)? There is also a fun, popular long course (50 metre pool) meet at the Sportsplex Feb 21 (organized by the Nepean Masters Swim Club). Contact me and I'll make sure you're set up with MSO and can attend to see you swim! Details of Masters events are here.

I plan to get a group to go to one of these meets as I firmly believe this is a great way to improve your swimming!

  • For those that have purchased fins, suits, googles...the best way is to submit cash or cheque payable to 'Anzai! Inc.' as I incur a credit card fee and would like to continue to offer items at a discount.

Hi again Masters,

A reminder to plan to attend the pot luck tomorrow between 6-9 pm. Bring your significant other along as I have an opinion on lots of things outside of swimming :) I plan to make my infamous "spicy shrimp asparagus with shitake (watch how you pronounce that) stir fry" for 6:15 pm sharp so come early and sample my creation. Guaranteed to improve your butterfly!

Marie plans on making home made pizza...some of you heard her interview with CBC's Adrian Harewood about her Meal Plan Calendar yesterday afternoon. She will be signing autographs tomorrow. I kid. If any of you would rather bring some other main courses or desserts (Jen's idea) then you certainly can. Just show up and we'll figure it out.

Again, we have four kids, two cats and one goofy, large dog with a whip for a tail (likes to wag it around) so if you opposed to any of those...including the pets...you were forewarned. Details and map are listed below. Hope to CU around the table!

Pot Luck dinner for swimottawa members at the Anzai's Friday, Oct 16th, 6-9 pm. Morning members bring salad or appetizer, noon/pm members bring dessert or cut fruit! BYOB.

Address: 963 Killeen Avenue, Ottawa. Click for Google map. Maitland north of Queensway, east on Lenester Ave, left on Killeen Avenue--left side at bend. We have two cats and a friendly dog.

C'mon out and see if you recognize people with their clothes on!

Other notes:
  • It's been a month into our practices and you should be thinking of all the drills we've done including:
    • Balanced body position with head looking down--do this and your hips will rise up
    • Flip turns with dolphin kick off wall (great drills this week)--the easiest way to get off the wall and glide to the max
    • Underwater breastroke pullouts--a great way to get ahead with less actual swimming
    • Undulating butterfly--resort to BR arms with dolphin kick if needed
    • Coming next week--streamline BK with flip turn!
    • Help put in lane ropes--thought I'd sneak that one in :)
  • This Sunday at JCC 6:45-8:00 am starts with coach Tim. Meet at back door of pool at 6:40 am for entry NOT the front door. I'll be at CU pool 10:00 am Sunday's as per usual.

Wed Oct 6/09

In the event of last Monday's cancellation due to the JCC holiday closure, I was able to get additional pool time and would like to invite any Monday (am, noon, pm) Masters member to a makeup practice this Monday, October 12th 6:45-8:00 am. Meet at the back door of the pool (where you exit to get to the outdoor pool) for 6:40 am and NOT the front door. Take your shoes off and walk to the change rooms. Let me know if you plan to come! Noon and pm Oct 12th sessions are cancelled due to the holiday schedule.

*We start Sundays 6:45-8:00 am October 18th with coach Tim. I'll be at CU pool 10:00-11:15 am.

Other Events

  • Pot Luck dinner for swimottawa members at the Anzai's Friday, Oct 16th, 6-9 pm.

  • People have been requesting swim suits, fins, goggles, caps. Contact me and we can let you try samples. I can have some suits you can try at the pot luck OR can bring them to the pool.

  • Sun November 1 at CU 10 am cancelled due to a stroke clinic class (registration form will be uploaded shortly). JCC practice 6:45-8:00 am will be available.
We hope you are benefiting from the drill focus during our practices. We want to ensure you do the drill correctly at the start of the season. Once we get closer to the holidays, we will replace the group drill with more endurance.

We will be starting to use fins more often as an aid for streamline kick as well as to feel your body on top of the water. If you do not have fins, let me know your shoe size and you can try them on. Cost is $30 for our members via cash or cheque, taxes in.

Lastly, come on out on Sundays as we have lots of room at the CU pool--one of the best pools in the area for space and water temperature. We resort to a more endurance based practice similar to our summer program. Free parking on the weekends!

Enjoy your swim,

Sept 11/09

Arggghhhhhhh! Never fails. When you click Send some new news changes things. Just heard that they are to sllloooowwwllly fill the indoor pool so it will take until next Friday. That said, here is what I'll propose given the outdoor pool is no longer the sole use of Masters and GFSC kids (as was the intended purpose).

Sept 14th week:
  • Mon thru Thu mornings 6:05-7:20 am OUTDOORS (3-4 lanes). Front doors open at 6:00, change and come through indoor back door to outdoor pool (did that actually make sense?). There is no outdoor change cubicles/washrooms as they have been removed.

Jaime will be your coach Wed am.

    Mon/Wed noon 12-1 pm OUTDOORS (2-3 lanes).

  • Mon thur Thu evenings will change to 7-8 pm (3-4 lanes) given that the public will be there and the weather looks good for next week.

Tim will be your coach Wed pm.
  • Sept 20th, practice at CU 10-11:15 am (JCC closed Sundays until Oct 18).

Start back indoors as normal Sept 21st week. I will have backup coaches as I am forced to go to Florida against my will...then Chicago...Detroit...U.S Virgin Islands...Dallas...NJ...

Cancellations: Mon Sept 28 for Yom Kippur (make up to any Tue practice).

Thank you for your understanding and patience. Now, everyone into an available pool!

Tom

Hi Masters, some of you have already registered so I should formally mention that we are offering drill-specific clinics in small groups starting this Sunday am, September 13 at Carleton University. Part I covers balance and rotation, which are the key fundamentals when learning how to swim with ease...and without thrashing your arms and legs. Part II and III will be offered Nov 1 and Dec 6 allowing time for you to practice the components. Teamzai will be on deck (and in the water) with Marie, Emily, and myself. Space is limited as we want an intimate instructional environment.

Details over at: http://www.swimottawa.com/programs.htm

Also, if there are any budding coaching out there that want to help coach this Fall/Winter at the JCC, send me a note. Always looking for keen swim enthusiasts who have a good rapport with adults and are ready to learn more by coaching others. Compensation to be discussed.

Lastly, if you need swim equipment (suits, goggles, prescription googles, fins, caps, bags, etc.) let me know and you will be able to purchase at our swimottawa discount. click the 'Equipment' button on our web page: https://secure.leda.lunarmania.com/~anzai0/swimottawa/Forms/Reg-swimwear.htm.

CU poolside (outdoor Mon am/pm and Tue am; then back indoors) next week!

Sept 9/09

The outdoor season has ended...or has it?? I have been waiting to hear the latest news with the tile maintenance at the indoor JCC pool. They currently have a lot of x's and o's marked where they have to do repair and today there were consultants checking it out. Personally, I'd rather swim outside but that will be hard when it drops below freezing :)

In any case, I do know as of today that the indoor pool will re-open Tue, Sept 15th. As it will take a day or two to settle the chemicals and with the great weather continuing next week, I am going to suggest:

Mon Sept 14th at the outdoor pool 6:05-7:20 am and 6:00-7:00 pm (gets dark afterwards) for any member due to the larger lane space. Tues Sept 15th at the outdoor pool 6:05-7:20 am and back indoors (provided everything is up and running) at the regular 8:30-9:30 pm time slot. Hence, from Tues pm forward will be at the regular indoor venue and time slots (6:05 am and 8:30 pm).

If there are any changes to this plan, I will email specific groups affected as I informed.

I appreciate your cooperation and understanding..but I do feel that we are fortunate to have a backup outdoor facility...and great weather!

Other notes of interest:
  • I typically wait until the start of the season before I charge your credit cards. If you are paying by cheque, please make payable to 'Anzai! Inc.' and send to 963 Killeen Avenue, Ottawa K2A 2Y1. When you submit your online registration form, it reserves your spot for that time slot.
We are at a max level and I will continue to monitor the groups to make sure we all fit within the lane space provided. Please make sure you ask permission should you want to change sessions (and in some cases, it may not be possible).
Monday am and pm groups incurred some cancellations due to holidays last season. Therefore, I will honour a make-up on Tuesday in any session (am, noon, or pm) when a Monday practice is cancelled.
Keep an eye on our Fall Masters page for events and cancellations. Due to JCC holidays there will be no Sun am practices at the JCC Sept 20th-Oct 11th. However, you can attend the Carleton U Sun practices 10:00-11:15 am on those days! In fact, take advantage of the CU pool as it's a larger venue and a great place for a swim.
I plan on coaching at least one session per group except for week's where I have to go on business travel. When I am away there will be a backup coach on deck such as Fraser, Scott, and Jamie. Keep in mind that all practices are pre-planned by yours truly...just the face that enforces it on deck may be different :)
Your protocol is to arrive on time, be courteous of your lane mates, help put in lane lines, and ensure it's a congenial atmosphere as it's always been.
  • Lastly, visit our web site for the latest news, upcoming clinics, and socials. It's all there (and if it's not, I'll put it there!)
Looking forward to seeing you poolside,

Everyone out of the water! Sad but true as this is the last week of scheduled practices for our summer session. We endured rain back in June/July but can't really remember it too much as it was swimming as usual. We had one cancelled practice out of 144 due to electrical storms so it really didn't affect us at all. Another successful season!

p.s. Look for aqua hockey as part of our Fun Friday Season Ending Finale this week. No shin pads needed. Mel will create the warmup this week (thanks Katy for your IM/25's last week!)...right Mel?!

If you're leaving us, I wish you the best and hope that you enjoyed the variety of our practices from coach Trevor and I. Hope to see you next summer! Now, you can go back to your 15x100 sets... :)

Now everyone back in the water! I have acquired additional pool hours and would like to invite you to a End Of Summer All 4 Strokes Clinic Tue/Thu Sept 1/3 am and pm to you members. As I was pondering what and who to prepare the extra pool time for, I wanted to offer something more than 'just another practice' and try to use guest coach expertise as a fresh perspective. This is where we stop counting the number of laps and learn a few technique tips along the way. If you're in to aerobic laps then this is not the venue for you. If you want to recharge after a long summer or as you head into a Masters Fall program, then I think you will find this of interest.

We'll use a combo of:

Each coach will have their own style so it will be a mix of the above. Other stuff:

- We have to let a couple of ol' f@rts float in a lane outdoors in the morning (indoor pool will be closed) so I expect 4-5 lanes.
- It'll be dark and possibly cool next week so bring something warm and appropriate for dryland activities
- You must register online to guarantee a spot

Sessions (with expert coach listed): Tue Sept. 1, 6:05-7:30 am (Breastroke--Steve Papai); Tue Sept. 1, 6:30-8:00 pm (Butterfly-Team Anzai--bring your fins), Thu Sept 3, 6:05-7:30 am (Backstroke-Jamie Wildsmith), and 6:30-8:00 pm (Freestyle practice-Scott Dick)

Better yet, I'm offering swimottawa members such as yourselves a drop-in fee of a measly $5 per session (cash is preferred). There will be a few new faces that are eager to attend so please welcome them.

Please click here to register as there will be limited space!

Have a great Fall everyone,

Tom, Trevor & Gang

Congrats to the 15 swimottawa members who participated in the 3rd Annual Bring on the Bay 3K swim! Kudos especially to those never having completed an open water swim or swum that distance before. We had top category finishers as well. Alex will have to improve his sightings though as he was headed towards Aylmer at one point! But then again, yours truly was wondering where the other swimmers had gone during the butterfly leg. I wonder if my plan to divert Alex's direction worked...

I presented the organizer with a $500 donation to Easter Seals on behalf of swimottawa. My goal is to have 15 more swimottawa members next year and to sponsor even more to the event! Circle Saturday, July 17th, 2010 on your calendar...and we'll see you...bay side!

This week's news:

Hi Tom

Wanted to share... I did the Gatineau Triathlon on the weekend. I came in first in my age group and beat my best time by almost 8 minutes . That despite not be allowed to wear a wetsuit and pouring rain for half the race!

Really want to say thanks for all the great swim coaching, tips and training the last two years. It has helped me so much! I had not done a long open water swim without a wet suit before and when I heard the morning of the race that we weren't allowed to wear them I panicked. But once in the water, i just concentrated on my technique and breathing and tried to stay relaxed. Though I'm not breaking any records, since I've joined the masters swim I've cut 2min 30sec off my 1500m (with wet suit) time. So thanks to you and all the other great coaches.

Dawn

Enjoy the summer...we are having a blast!

Tom, Trevor and the rest of the Swimzai's

July 13, 2009

Everyone into the lake!  Britannia Bay that is. We have a good group of swimottawa participants from 14 years (Emily Anzai) to 54 years young (name withheld to protect the innocent) who will swim this Saturday, July 18th. There will be varying skill level and ample time to finish the swim. Personally, I will attempt to do a 3K I.M. where I'll swim 750m of each stroke (modified butterfly though so don't be too impressed). And, you can still get in on the swimottawa discount of $35 by registering this week (send in the form, mention 'swimottawa' and forward payment as instructed) Let's have more of our group out there and have fun in the river...let me know if you plan to join us!

For more information about this open water swim event, read the info I received at the end of this email.

Open Water Swimming Tips

Some timely advice comes from swimottawa youth member, Ian Donald, who is is a junior elite triathlete from Ottawa and will be heading off to the University of Guelph in the fall to continue his training at the Provincial Triathlon Centre. Having placed 4th at the Pan Am Juniors in May, Ian has earned a spot on the Ontario Team for the 2009 Canada Games and also the 2009 Junior World Championships in Australia this September.

--------------------------------------

Pre-Swim
- Know your water. Make sure your swimming in "clean" water and that it isn't terribly
cold. Anything below 20 degrees is going to be chilly without a wetsuit. Anything below
16 degrees is going to be chilly no matter what you wear.
- Assess traffic, be it other swimmers or small boats.
- Always swim with someone watching you, or with at least one other swimmer, and be
sure to wear a bright swim cap.

Swim
- Try and find your regular rhythm that you bring to the pool. Your stroke should still feel
familiar no matter what the venue.
- When sighting, be sure to only lift your head high enough for your goggles to skim the
surface. Sighting is not like "head-up freestyle" that you do in swim practice. If you lift
your head any higher your hips will start to sink.
- Separate your breathing from sighting. These are two very different motions, as
breathing should still be done to the side.
- Drafting is not just a cycling technic. If you need a bit of a rest, try swimming in
someone else's bubbles and you'll find that you can catch their current and swim at their pace with less effort.

Post-Swim
- Rinse off and enjoy your new found fitness!

Wetsuit specific:
- Wetsuits are meant to help insulate you, but will also make you float
much better. You will therefore find that one generally swims much

faster in a wetsuit, and it helps non-swimmers more than competitive
swimmers as body position is somewhat taken care of already.
- When putting the wetsuit on, do your best to keep your fingernails from digging into the suit. This will prevent tearing. Wetsuits can sometimes feel restrictive in the shoulders so make sure that you have lots room there by pulling up the suit and giving yourself more fabric up top.
- Get someone to help you zip up. After the swim be sure to rinse your suit and hang it out of the sun.
- Wetsuits can run you anywhere from $150-$500 depending on the make, but they are also one of the hottest used tri items out there. TriRudy.com is a great resource for buying and selling.

Thank you for participating in the Bring on the Bay 3K Open Water Swim, sponsored by Bushtukah. The swim is part of the annual Easter Seals Regatta, organized by the Nepean Sailing Club (NSC) and the Britannia Yacht Club (BYC). Our goal this year is to raise $55,000 for Ottawa's Easter Seals kids and families. Please visit http://nsc.ca/easterseals/easterseals.htm for more information on the Regatta.

Swim Packet Pick-up and Late Registration:  Friday July 17th, 6 pm to 8 pm, Britannia Yacht Club, 2777 Cassels Street.  Please join us at BYC for our kickoff "Rock the Dock" party and auction. No tickets or reservations are required. Free snacks will be served; in addition, drinks and BBQ dinners will be available at preferential BYC member prices. Browse and bid on great auction items, enjoy live music from River City Junction and dance the night away.  Please download the waiver form at www.bringonthebay.com and bring it along, or fill one out at the packet pick-up. If you have pledge forms, please bring them too -- you'll be eligible for special prizes on swim day. Course information will be provided. Also, check out the spectacular view at the swim finish line:  http://tinyurl.com/n47yn7  For those who cannot join us on Friday night, swim packet pick-up and late registration will take place Saturday July 18 from 7 to 7:30 am at the Nepean Sailing Club, 3259 Carling Avenue, at Dick Bell Park.

Swim Start:  Nepean Sailing Club, 3259 Carling Avenue, at Dick Bell Park. Bring your swimsuit, wetsuit (optional), goggles, pre-race nutrition and hydration. Swim caps are mandatory and will be provided.  We'll provide you with a bag to drop off your shoes and extra clothing which you may want to have waiting for you at the finish line. If you prefer, bring your own bag or knapsack. We'll provide a tag with your assigned race number.

Plenty of parking is available at the Nepean Sailing Club. Please check-in at the main clubhouse entrance and you'll be directed to the swim start. The club's washrooms will be available to all swimmers.

The swim must begin at 8 am sharp!!!  You may warm up before the swim but please be out of the water by 7:45 am. Please follow instructions so we can get the swim started on time.  Many other Regatta events are scheduled that day so punctuality is imperative.  Your swim cap will have your assigned race number. It must be worn to record your time and to account for all swimmers.  All swimmers will start together so please seed yourself according to your predicted swim time. More information will be provided on swim morning.

The Swim:  The course will be well marked.  Keep the swim markers to your right. The finish line will be described when you pick up your packet.  Plenty of kayaks and safety boats will be on the course to offer guidance and rest opportunities. If you need to remove yourself from the swim, we'll provide you with transport to the finish line. Medical help will also be available.
We do not plan to impose a time limit as we want all swimmers to enjoy the accomplishment of swimming the full distance. However, this may change due to the availability of volunteers (safety boats, etc.)

Finish Line and Awards Presentation:  Please exit the water promptly and keep your swim cap in place until you have been acknowledged by the finish-line volunteers.

Your swim bag will be available to you.  Food and refreshments will be provided to participants, complements of the Britannia Yacht Club. Your family and friends are invited to join you with plenty of free parking available.

A short awards presentation will take place at approximately 9:30 - 9:45am. Awards medals will be presented to the top 3 male and female age category winners -- all other participants will receive finishing medals. Plenty of prizes are available thanks to our title sponsor, Bushtukah, and Fresh Air Experience. So stick around!

Transportation back to the Nepean Sailing Club will be provided to those who require it.
We'll post results online soon after the swim. Please check the website.

Saturday Night Hawaiian Luau:  You and your friends are invited to attend a special Saturday Night Hawaiian Luau at the Nepean Sailing Club to celebrate the wrapup of another successful Easter Seals Regatta. Swim event awards will be highlighted, along with other Regatta awards -- plus a four-course Hawaiian feast, live music from the Richer and Rose Band and dancing.  A slide show of the day's highlights will be presented.  Please check out the event poster (attached).  Additional costs apply. Please reserve online at http://nsc.ca/galley/galley2.htm

Looking forward to seeing you all on swim day.

What are you waiting for...c'mon on out and enjoy us!  Whether it's sunny, cool, dark, or raining (except thunder/lightening) we are on deck 12 times per week! The water is above 80 degrees, clear, and a lot of lane space. Here's the scoops in point form:
  • Tue and Thu 6:00 am session is the busiest but as we have many sessions to choose from per week you are welcomed to come to any of the sessions. This includes the full membership and the drop-in members. If you come to all 12 you can bring your cost per practice down to $1.83 :)

  • Come out Friday a.m. for one of our Friday Fun practices where we think outside the swim pool box and throw in some group sprints, circuits, triathlon wave swimming, slide twenty-five's along with the rest of the regular practice sets.

  • Porta huts and change rooms expected to be ready just outside the outdoor pool entrance June 22nd week. Best place to park, is the lot facing the outdoor pool (one block east of main parking lot) OR in the Hillel school parking lot (one block south of main parking lot). Just park between the lines...right John?!

  • If you're interested in the swim drill Tue/Thu 7:00-7:30 pm, please show up ready to go at 7:00 pm sharp as we want to reduce interruptions as we progress through the half-hour.

  • If you're interested in video analysis, let me know as we will be video taping in the next week. This service is included with your swimottawa fee at no extra charge.

  • If you need suits, goggles, or equipment (fins, paddles, mesh bags, backpacks) contact me and I will check availability. Cost is reduced as a swimottawa member.

  • We've had about 8 people express interested so far in the Ottawa River - Nepean Sailing Club to Britannia Beach 3k swim Sat. July 18th at 8:00 am. To sign up and for more information, visit bringonthebay.com. Mention swimottawa and get a discount (regular rates will be $40 before June 30th and $50 afterwards). Let's get a larger group out and practice our chop swimming!
Towards the end of this month promises to be an action-packed as coach Trevor will be on-board and our fair-weathered members will be out in force. The first two weeks have been great to be outside and the numbers are spreading out nicely. Take advantage of the weather and make as many practices as you can. Before you know it, you'll be back inside...wishing you were outside again!

*swimottawa.com SUMMER SESSION STARTING SOON!
If you would like future emails to be sent to a different/additional email, please reply

Welcome! You are receiving this email as you have registered for our long awaited outdoor program slated to start next week. I've been in contact with Robin Jordan at the JCC and we are good to go starting Monday am, June 8th! Water is in, inspection approved, and the pool heater is warming up the water as we speak. Expect the pool to take a week to regulate the water temperature. Do expect to swim in all weather conditions during this session from heat, rain and sleet (except for thunder and lightning). Do not be deterred from dark, rain cloudy weather as we swim in those conditions (e.g., last year we only had two practices where it actually rained). And, if you're like me, I actually like swimming in the rain...maybe because I don't have to get wet while coaching!

We expect our 6 am session to be the busiest particularly Tue-Thu. We are at the same numbers as last year with 20 new members joining our summer program. Last year the group was spread out so there was plenty of lane space and we expect the same this year. Keep in mind that the 7:15 am session will be less busy...and perhaps more conducive to your sleeping habits :) We are moving our kids program to an 8:30 am session so there will be lots of room for all. If you are planning on attending the 6 am session, plan on a few practices to get the lane assignments based on skill worked out. We usually have the slower group in the outside lanes, and the faster group in the middle.

Take advantage of the Tue-Thu 7:00-7:30 pm drill sessions. We will use the first few weeks as a review of proper drill technique so new members are highly encouraged to attend so you know how/why we do the drills we do. We use a limited bit of Total Immersion (www.totalimmersion.net) and a lot more on sets to allow you to emphasize feel and technique. We will start with balance, scull, and progress to extended dog paddle and core rotation. You can stay for the regular 7:30-8:30 pm practice session.

The Coaches

* Tom Anzai will coach most Masters practices and swim a few to test them out :)
* Trevor Anzai will co-coach Masters
* Marie Anzai will assist when she finishes her age group competitive duties later in the summer
* Guest coaches Fraser Anderson, Scott Tweedie will assist

Registration and Payment

* Payment has been charged to your card you have submitted. For more recent registrations, please allow 7-10 days processing time. If you have not arranged payment to date, you risk losing your spot to someone on the waiting list. Your statement will read 'Anzai! Inc.' as the vendor, which is the corporation operating 'swimottawa'.

Driving directions: From Queensway, take Maitland North, turn right on Carling Ave (heading West), turn right at lights on Broadview (Canada Trust is at corner), past stop sign and next left into facility parking lot. There is also additional parking on other side of building to the East, where it's the closest to the outdoor pool (pool is located behind the main centre).

Either come ready to go on deck at the start time of practice, or change in the JCC change rooms inside and enter through back doors of indoor pool through the gates to the outdoor pool. NOTE: The Centre front entrance is opened by staff at 6:00 am--if you attend the 6:00-7:15 am practice, either come ready to go on deck outside for 6:00 am (we'll open up the outdoor pool ourselves at 5:55 am) OR change inside and we'll see you shortly after outside.

To Bring

* Swim wear, goggles, towel to wrap yourself in as it may be cool
* Sandals optional as your feet will pick up sand to/from the outdoor pool
* Swim fins (I will bring a pair if you indicated you need to purchase for $30) particularly the novice swimmers so we can work on your technique
* I will be placing a Speedo/TYR order shortly for our swimottawa members...let me know if you need discounted swim wear/accessories (fill out online order form on the web site). I carry an assortment of mirrored TYR goggles $18, open water 'NestPRO' TYR wider peripheral goggles $18, as well as prescription goggles (will need your prescription as -1 to -8 in either clear or smoke) $24. All prices are taxes in. Delivery to the pool is also included :)

The Pool

* 25m, six-lane outdoor chlorinated pool
* Heated, temperature fluctuates and has been too hot IMO on some occassions
* Shallow end is 32 inches so if you do flip turns, make sure you do compact ones. Test it out first!
* Porta potties and changerooms located in the small grassy area by parking lot in front of the pool WILL BE OPEN JUNE 21st
* Backstroke flags will be set up at the standard 5m from pool ends
* Rope lanes are not wave proof so expect some 'chop' when you swim...just like open-water :P
* Single shower rinse off located beside entrance gate

Other Stuff You Should Know About

* Please be cordial to your fellow lane mates and members of our club. Know the circle pattern of the lane beforehand.
* Lane 1 and 2 will be the novice lanes with the faster swimmers in the centre lanes (#3 and 4). It will take a few practices to figure out who should swim where and the coaches will assist.
* Try to be on time for practice and stay the duration so as not to disrupt your lane members.
* We will swim outdoors in sun, clouds, rain...only exception is thunder and lightning where we will vacate the pool.
* Health and liability waiver signed at the time of online registration.
* Have fun and enjoy the great outdoors!

And, if you've read this far...you a real swimming keener! So, anyone up to swim the 3K 'Beach to Beach' (Andrew Haydon to Britannia Beach) mid July?! Great way to give to charity. Peter did it last year and survived. It would be great to have a group do it together for fitness, charity, and comradery. Let me know if you're interested.

Talk about temperature variation! We've had make-up practices in 84 degree pools as well as a 74 degree pool. Swim hats off to those who have attended these practices we have offered. As well, there has been sightings of other swimottawa Masters at Plante and Brewer. Here's a few drills we worked on this week:

There's more good news in that the tile work is on schedule, and in fact a bit ahead, and the pool is expected to open Friday, April 17th. More good news in that we will go ahead with our Easter Sunday swim 9:45-11:00 am at Brewer. Coach Tim will be there. If we can get a couple of you to help put in a few lanes and the backstroke flags--meet on deck 10 minutes beforehand. We have a great practice set for that day. Best way to compensate for all that Easter chocolate!

Cancellations: Cancelled Sat Apr 11 @ Brewer
Make-ups: *JCC closed Mar 30 to Apr 17 for unscheduled repairs, *make-up practices (see schedule below and attend any of the following):

Sat Apr 18 onwards: back to normal schedule (e.g., Sat. 6:00-7:15 pm @ Brewer, Sun 6:45-8 am @ JCC)

*Note: UofO is a colder pool so some of you may decide to test out that wet suit you have!

Have a great weekend and we'll see everyone soon!

OK, I admit it. This one took a while to work out to the best that I could do. Fortunately, we have partnerships with other pools in the city and I can offer the following as a result of the JCC pool closure Mar 30-April 18 due to unscheduled tile work. And, yes, there is a practice this Sun am an expected to resume Apr 19 am at the JCC!

First off, always check the notices over at http://www.swimottawa.com/SwimOttawa%20Masters.htm as this is subject to change from time to time (check the day before):

I sincerely hope you take advantage of the pool time above as considerable time and expense went into the bookings. In some cases, we'll be sharing the pool with kids in the other lanes...but there will be space for you to enjoy. I will be on deck coaching most of these practices and hope to see you there as well! Let me know if you plan to attend any of these. Sat drop-in members can attend any of the above.

If you plan to swim on your own and want me to send you the practices for the week, email me and I'll do that.

Also, some of you registered for the summer program already as it was incorrectly posted (it was last year's form). I'll work on that and let you know when the door is officially open for June-August swimming in the next week!

Set Your Clocks Back Saturday Midnight (actually Sun 1:59:59 am to be precise)! This means that if you intend to be at Sun JCC practice, make sure you adjust your clocks. I'll be there to coach, will you?

There is currently a tile problem in the baby pool as seen by the Caution tape. They will determine soon when to shut down the entire pool for two weeks be it next week OR wait until April/Summer. I will contact you when we know. The cancellations on the web page (go to www.swimottawa.com, click Masters link, and see the listing beside the pool photo) are assuming nothing closes as per:

Cancellations as of March 6/08: Sat Mar 14/21, 6 pm (Brewer), Sun Mar 15, 6:45 am (JCC)
JCC closures: Wed April 8 Close @4 Passover, Thurs/Fri 9/10 Closed, Tues Apr 14 Close @4, Wed/Thurs 15/16 Closed Passover , Thu May 28 Close @ 4, Fri May 29 Closed Shavout

Again, we will update this list as we are notified. Do keep in mind the cancellations that are listed.

Come out this weekend as you may not have a chance for a while. My family is going to Costa Rica Mar 10-22nd and we have arranged other swimottawa coaches to fill in. Enjoy their different coaching styles (i.e., take a break from mine!).

Expanded Summer Plans
We're already getting excited about moving our program outdoors to the outdoor JCC pool. Look for the season to start even earlier at the beginning of June with the choice of 10 (!) different practice times and drill-specific sessions. Coach Trevor, myself and guest coaches will lead the expected sold-out crowd. Returning members can register early by following the Registration link on the web site (coming soon) before the deadline. Book a spot while you can!

Testamonials
Two new ones just added. These are unsolicited (scouts honour):

Just want you to know that I have really enjoyed this year so far!  Definitely the best club I've swam with.  I like the variety, being challenged and the feedback to help me improve. (Lisa L, Night Masters)

By the way, I loved the video analysis.  Really lets you see what to work on.  I am enjoying the practices so much and really feel the improvement.  Many thanks to you and Marie. (Carrie M, Noon Masters)

Have a great March everyone!

Swim because you can,

Tom

Feb 11/09

Hi again Masters,

Well, it was a very interesting week of practices so far!
Starting off on the weekend was a return to our BPA (Best Possible Average) set of 200's. This is an excellent way of recording your progress for race-pace times. It was interesting to see times that were even, fade, and build. Keep your times in mind as you continue to improve. You all did great.

We then moved into a different kind of practice with the "swim as far as you can" sets. The first set gave you no definitive goal or sense of accomplishment. The second set, the coaches gave you a mathematical goal (1/2 of the first set + 25m). The last set we allowed YOU to set the goal and see whether YOU were able to achieve it. The lesson here is how to change the tempo of your stroke+KICK to increase the intensity =  results. The other lesson is to shed the pack mentality and swim your own pace. Those of you who did a triathlon start made it interesting to watch :) Also, you were able to see the benefits of setting a realistic goal rather than aimlessly swimming up and down. Great work everyone!

We will continue to be one of the more creative clubs when it comes to practice sets as we use tips we've learned in the sport as well as from others who can provide insight (e.g., 2-beat vs 6-beat drills from coach Jessica who is a long distance specialist). Having said that, I'd like to invite some of you to create a practice we can try. Send it in and I will incorporate it in an upcoming practice.

---

6-beat vs 2-beat explained via video
It's the number of leg kicks per complete stroke cycle while you're swimming.

With a two beat kick, you do one kick with the left leg at the same time as the left arm is pulling, which should also be around the time the right hand is entering the water. You do another kick, with the right leg, at the same time as the right arm is pulling and the left hand is entering the water.

A six beat kick inserts an extra kick with each leg between each of these two kicks.

You can see the two styles in this youtube clip:
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=oac5nUDns94
The swimmer nearest the camera is using a six beat kick, the next one away is using a two beat kick.
---

We've updated the upcoming cancellations due to the Family Day Weekend (pool and coach shortages) as well as the decision to offer regular practices during March Break due to the closures in April for Passover.

Cancellations: Sat Feb 14-Mon Feb 16 (includes Brewer and JCC), JCC closures: Wed April 8 Close @4 Passover, Thurs/Fri 9/10 Closed, Tues Apr 14 Close @4, Wed/Thurs 15/16 Closed Passover , Thu May 28 Close @ 4, Fri May 29 Closed Shavout

Did anyone order a female Spacey Daisy pink suit? I have it as a request...but dunno who wants it.

Have fun everyone and stay out of the rain!

Jan 26/09

Hello Masters,

I must say we had a lull earlier in the month but attendance is picking up...and that's a good thing. Coach Jessica (Mon am) encouraged me to get the video equipment out so we've been filming and analyzing your strokes the early part of this week. It's a great way to see yourself swim...watch the good points...see where you can improve. Too, it's a way for us coaches to see how we can tailor our drills and workouts. Look for emphasis on proper FR catch coming soon...

Speaking of workouts, you will have noticed some 'Chicago Masters' themes the past two weekends. These are workouts I've done with the masters group down there (scary that they think I live there = too much travel). You'll also notice we do more distance Sat/Sun so c'mon out as there is lots of space!

Coach Jessica has created a great 2-beat vs 6-beat kick set for the 2nd practice this week (Warning: there's a main kick set!). Make sure you come out so you can find out what that means. Jessica was a champion long-distance freestyler so she knows a thing or two about stroke efficiency. She kind of scares me.

Some other news:
  • Coach Tim will be taking Thur pm and Sun am practices. The Swimzai's will all be at the Regional Championships for kids in Kingston. My job is to make sure our dog doesn't eat the food in the hotel room. I may have to sample everything in the grocery bags though.

  • Since you're swimmers, you might as well know legal turns. We're spending time the 1st practice this week on proper turns as follows:
    - FLY: two hand touch at the wall, 2-3 dolphin kicks off the wall (kicks are quick with low amplitude--half of a normal dolphin kick, streamline position)
    - BACK: count strokes from flags to wall, subtract one, reach with last arm and roll to front, flip turn, push off wall on back, 2-3 dolphin kicks up to surface, hands forward in streamline position)
    - BREAST: two hand touch at the wall, underwater pullout (glide off wall, full arm pull to thigh with simultaneous dolphin kick, glide, kick and recover arms forward to surface)
    - FREE: keep head down (no last breath) into wall, quick/compact flip turn, plant feet at 45 degrees, push off on side and level to front, 2-3 dolphin kicks off the wall, take at least a stroke before breathing

Coaches will enforce the technique listed above...or at least I know I will :)

  • If you plan to compete this Winter/Spring, let me know as I need 4-6 weeks to confirm registration with Masters Ontario

  • I received some Speedo/TYR backpacks and mesh equipment bags for a member price of $60 and $12 respectively. I also have goggle cases at $9. All taxes in. Let me know if you need 'stuff'. Online 2009 catalog will be uploaded soon.
Happy swimming and safe driving,

Dec 5/08

Join us at Brewer Pool Sat. Dec. 13th, 6:00-7:15 pm for our 1st Annual 1000 or 1500 metre swim where you predict your time before the swim. Swimmer who completes the distance and is closest to their time wins! All participants will get a free gift from the club. Cost is $10 for non-swimottawa.com Masters.

In the spirit of Christmas, I will donate all proceeds--all registration fees to be donated to TriRudy plus an additional $200 to the charity of the winner's choice.

Contact me if you're interested. Online form will be available on our web site. Fitness and waiver form must be filled out. Space is limited.

Some fun relays will follow with light snacks to be served. Warm down will be at The Georgetown pub on Bank Street as per usual :P

Nov. 14/08

Hello Masters,

Guess it's safe for me to come out now that all the holidays are done with until Christmas (see web site). We really value your understanding of closures beyond our control as well as appreciating the extra pool time we have booked as a result. Speaking of which, there were 0.5 people per lane last Saturday pm at Brewer(!). If you want wider lanes, cooler water, and more distance than this is the practice session for you! Keep in mind, that we always tailor for all skill levels so everyone is invited. Bring a friend for the Sat pm drop-in--registration is on the web site.

I am completing some brutal work travels and would like to formally introduce Tim Burton (pre-Comp coach and former GFSC competitive age group swimmer) and Carla St-Germain (Masters swimmer and World Lifesaving medallist) to our staff on an as-needed basis. You'll see Tim Wed pm and Carla starting this Sun am. Also, thanks to Andrea Douglas (Masters swimmer and multiple GFSC swimmer parent) for helping out the noon swims when Marie cannot attend. Thanks to you all!

Here's the latest scoops:
  • We are finishing up our drill focus as we begin our season. Hope you've enjoyed the suggested drills for each stroke as well as the flip turns you may have been taught from coach Fraser Anderson. If you feel you need specific help, ask the coach and we'll work on it with you.

We're fiddling with the JCC lanes for each group. Basically, we'll modify as long as there is group agreement. My job is to make sure everyone is happy :)
  • We will be starting to use more fin work (this Sat/Sun actually) to make your feet aware of the proper position--as well as make your legs work. If you need to purchase fins, send me a reply with your shoe size and I'll arrange to bring in a pair. Cost is $30. Let me know if you need caps, googles, or suits at our membership discount prices (20-40% below retail). I also received a shipment of Speedo backpacks, mesh bags, and deck shoes (like the ones I wear which are super comfortable).
  • We'll be announcing a pot luck soon once I get through my travel schedule. Just remember that I eat a lot :)
  • Congrats to Andrew Armstrong for completing the Hawaiian Iron Man in October! He'd have some good mass start experience for clearing out the member lane at the J. Did I just say that?

Sept 25/08

Hello Masters,

We are towards the end of our first week of official practices (no more clean Queensway air, and dark eerie mornings—I miss it already) of indoor saltwater swimming. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in lane assignments or cordial enthusiasm. We start the season off with some drill review/introduction and intentionally lower the mileage so you start the season off with a focus on technique and feel. We really want to stress the importance of feeling the stroke with proper efficiency…before we increase the intensity. Keep in mind that we will continually vary the workout with different themes. Let us know if you have a specific goal in mind (upcoming race, learn a new skill) and we can incorporate it in or offer 1-on-1 time.

Speaking of which, I talked to this morning’s members about the importance of goal setting. Most of you commented in your reg forms that you are seeking fitness, technique, and personal development. My answer to that is attending a local Masters meet where all three goals are met! Don’t think of these events as “where all the fast people swim” as that’s totally untrue. Instead, it’s where people just like you go to swim a few lengths, socialize, and have fun! You’ll see people your age, your ability…enjoying a swim.

Here’s what I’d like you to do. Talk to one of your lane mates and have them join you in our upcoming Fun Meet in Nov/Dec at Brewer Pool and a Winter Masters meet. My goal is to have as many people out for the first Fall event and enough for a couple of 180+ (age of all four members) relays in the Winter (February Winterlude at Nepean Sportsplex). I’d like to see a club atmosphere—to benefit your individual development.

Here’s the scoops for this week and next:

Practice ‘n Social this Saturday at Brewer 6:00-7:15 pm. Lots of lane space, practice tailored for all abilities with a couple of higher intensity lanes. AND we all meet at Patty’s Pub, 1186 Bank Street blocks away from the pool. Bring your partner or meet us there. Click here for a map. Use this great facility as your third practice, a makeup, or a way of chatting with the coaches afterwards.

If you have friend or spouse who would like to join in the swim, register online for the ‘Saturday Drop-in’ on our web site. Sign up two and you get a $20 discount.

We start Sun 6:45-8:00 am at the JCC. Meet at the doors at 6:40 am where it will be opened for us and we have exclusive use of the pool. Keep in mind that we will try to fit all levels in the four lanes. Your cooperation is appreciated as we work it out. Really depends on who shows up.

I have supplies of poly suits, goggles, caps, straps, earplugs, racing suits, backpacks, mesh bags, deck shoes, hand paddles and fins on hand. Contact me and I’ll bring them in. I’ll have a members web site so you can browse and get the swimottawa discount that will be 30-40% less than retail stores.

Cancellations—a lot are coming up at the JCC. Look on the web site for the listing over at http://www.swimottawa.com/SwimOttawa%20Masters.htm. Affects next Mon pm Sept 29 (closed at 4 pm), Tue/Wed (closed) throughout October. This is why we offered early practices in September and started our season earlier (last year we started practices end of October). If you plan to do practice elsewhere or at other times, contact me and I’ll email you the practices. Use Sat @ Brewer as one of your makeup practices as there are no cancellations there except Thanksgiving weekend. Your cooperation is appreciated as we respect the days of recognition for the Jewish faith.

New members—let me know how it’s going for you!

CU poolside,

Tom

Subject: *swimottawa.com FALL PROGRAM early news

Hi all summer and Fall swimmers,

I’ve had a chance to review all registrations to date and can say, not surprisingly, Mon/Wed and Tue/Thu am are now sold out! Bring your shovels to practice so we can add a few more lanes : ) Everyone will able to join their ‘preferred session’ that they registered for unless I contacted you about placing you in your ‘2nd preference’. I will continue to honour returning Fall members first priority. There’s room at noon and pm so far. As Mon/Wed am is a brand new group, I want to make sure that we can accommodate all skill levels in the three available lanes. I’d like to offer any morning member to transfer one of morning swims with any evening swim—contact me for confirmation. Here are the scoops for our pre-season news:

Given the number of Jewish holidays in Sept and October (see web site for a listing), I’d like to offer pre-season practices starting Sept 9th week, Tue/Thu 6:05-7:20 am in the outdoor pool. It will be dark and cool but the water will be warm (too warm?). I will not be offering any night time sessions due to darkness and anticipated low attendance. We will continue this through the Sept 15th up to the re-opening of the indoor pool Sept 22nd week. ANY registered Fall member or summer 2008 member can attend. Enjoy the last of the great outdoors—it was a great summer!

As a bonus to you members and a way to spread out the numbers, I’ve purchased more pool time Saturday 6:00-7:15 pm at Brewer Pool (chlorinated). This facility will allow us to train in a competitive 6-lane, 25 metre pool with diving blocks accessible. Returning coach, Sheri Ohlman-Coughlan, will handle the practice with Marie and I having a chance to swim with you. This practice will be particularly of interest to those that intend to compete. Open to all skill levels as well as a $10 drop-in fee for non-members (contact me). No extra charge for registered Fall members. Starts Saturday September 20th—see you poolside! Sun 6:45-8:00 am still on at the JCC—please meet at front door at 6:40 am as we will have exclusive use of the pool. Starts Sun, Sept 28th. All Fall members from any session welcome.

We are finalizing our coach assignments for the Fall. I will be initiating a new Youth swim Club out at Canterbury Pool Mon/Wed am…those practices will be coached by veterans Marie/Trevor Anzai and Fraser Anderson. Trevor will take Wed pm and share Sun am with Fraser. Returning member, Scott Tweedy, and I will co-coach Tue/Thu pm. Except Mon/Wed am, I expect to be at least one or both of all other practices to encourage, monitor, and cajole! I do have a brutal travel schedule coming up in the Fall—let me know if you can substitute coach while I am away. Keep in mind that almost all practices are created by moi and everyone does the same with a focus and theme in mind.

For those paying by cheques, please remit to 963 Killeen Avenue, Ottawa, ON K2A 2Y1 ASAP in order to finalize your registration process and secure your spot.

For those not returning, send me a note and I’ll take you off the email distribution. Happy swimming wherever you are!

Kudos
Here are some emails that we've been getting about your great swimming endeavours:

Fast swim times helping me place in my category

“This time I averaged about 3:09.  That's a pretty good (in my mind) improvement.... could be I was just not feeling up to snuff the first time?? or could be I'm just that much stronger now that it is later in the season but I have to say I felt good leaving the pool with that in my head last thursday!...all this to say that my swim and my bike are what are making me place top 3 in my category in every race this year.”  SW

I’ve run out of things to say. And that’s a good thing.

Here's the pooper scoopers for this week:

Suits, goggles, sandals prices will be listed shortly for you members. I plan to exhibit at Dovercourt Fri 3-5 pm at the Kids of Steel as well as Sat am at Westboro, and the Canadian IM Aug 30th at Mooney's Bay. "I did the Sprint Tri on the weekend in Mooney's bay...it was only a 500m swim but unlike past years where I dreaded the swim and ended up doing breast stroke till I stopped hyperventilating, I actually *enjoyed* the swim part. I even passed a few people...feeling great and with tons of energy to finish the race. Thanks to the coaching I've got I'm much more confident and relaxed when I swim - I'm no longer just  trying to 'get through' the swim. so thank you for that." (Dawn M.)

I had a great workout today (meaning I've been dying for a nap all day). I'm exhausted, but am taking your guilt trips VERY seriously! I won't be there in the morning, but plan to get there for the evening skills and drills :) You just wait, I'm going to try and win "most improved swimmer" by the end of the summer. Hope you're enjoying the consistent summer weather of 'cloudy with a chance of rain' so far. Through it all, we've only had one practice of rain on our second day--no worries for swimmers as it's a wet activity anyway. :)

Q. How do you come up with your practice sets?

A. We like to rotate the theme from day to day from recovery, long distance, sprint, and choice to vary the workouts. Both Trevor and I trade workout ideas and use traditional as well as contemporary drills and sets. We both like to use creativity in the sets (e.g., Perimeter kicking last Friday, timed 300m kick Thursday) so you won't be bored with the same sets over and over. As long-time swimmers, you will never see us write 15x100 or 10x200 on a board that we used to do with our minds switched in off-mode. Don't ask Trevor about his 100x100 he did last training camp. We also get ideas from other sources--for example, last week you did practices from the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Masters (via Swimming World magazine). We hope you enjoy the divesity.

Here's this week's news:

We've spent five weeks on front crawl technique from balance, rotation, breathing, and pull. This week we'll do backstroke drills, the following week will be breaststroke. A reminder that these drills are done with a small group Tu/Thu 7-7:30 pm so c'mon out when you can!

I've just received Speedo Team Backpacks, Women's/Men's Wave Sandals, Women's/Men's buoy watershoes (the ones I wear which are super comfortable), and Women's Migoto Thongs. I'll also be ordering suits from Speedo and TYR for next week--let me know and I'll get you availability and pricing. Keep in mind that these prices are well below retail as you are swimottawa.com members (e.g., team backpacks were selling for $90 at Olympic Trials--you can get them for $65 tax included!)

The Anzai's will be on holiday's August 11th week to the East Coast...please welcome 'f'ing fast' Fraser as our sub coach that week.

Member Mumblings: Alex I loves the drills and also full contact Thai Chi...can't imagine my mom who is a fan of TC touching anyone. Andi Murphy is back from holidays...more kick for you. Brent V has calculated he's saving 10 sec per 100m on his triathlon swims...he's now faster than I was wetsuit-less, Dawn M keeps getting out of the timed kicks...we'll get her, Jackie J is so enthused that she plans her first tri this summer...great stuff, Jim T went four consecutive mornings last week...only to be AWOL this week (holidays), Jamie W did the sprint tri last weekend...and did NOT enjoy the seaweed he collected on his wetsuit, Lindsay M is sporting remnants of a black eye from an errant lifeguard paddle board...which looks like a bad mascara day.

Fall reg news cometh--it'll be up on the web site by the end of the week with practice dates/times, cost, and swim pre-requisites so we can fit in the three indoor lanes. It'll be an exciting season with new participants but the same coaching philosophy. We will be registered with Masters Ontario for liability/insurance reasons and a group will be able to participate in local meets including the Provincial Championships in Ottawa next Spring. Competitions are friendly and a way to socialize with your team mates. Open to all abilities and I encourage everyone to try it out.

Kudos
Here are some emails that we've been getting about your great swimming endeavours:

I am having a great time with the swimming.  I am dreading the end of the summer as that means the end of the outdoor pool...I have noticed an improvement in my stroke and in my comfort and times, this is a wonderful experience. Thanks to you and to Trevor for all of your feedback, it has been extremely helpful, keep it coming! SN

I am still on holidays, but I wanted to tell you that last weekend there was a "long distance" swim held here - a 1000m swim in the Ottawa River.Guess who won it?  Gold medal, baby!  I think that every other time I swam it (years and years) it always seemed far, but now I just thought to myself "this is the warm up!" SB

I'm no longer the Ottawa Senators starting goalie RE

Have a great week everyone,

Tom
